Black Spear (RuneQuest)

“Know then, oh Prince, that in the Sea Season after the Battle of the Queens was Colymar’s Black Spear sent forth to rouse Argrath from his slumbers.”

An epic saga of the Hero Wars, festooned with heroquests and deep Gloranthan weirdness. Probably the strangest thing I’ve ever written. Designed as a follow-up to The Duel at Dangerford, but it also works as a stand-alone mini-campaign. Canonically set in Sea Season 1627, with suggestions at the back of the book for changing things around. Illustrated lavishly by Mike O’Connor: 50+ pictures, one or two songs, some poetry, not many stat-blocks.

"The sheer audaciousness of Nick's plot makes my head spin... One of the greatest scenarios ever written for RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha." - Michael O'Brien (Sun County)

"Top-shelf, high-grade Gloranthan psychedelia. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough." - Andrew Logan Montgomery (Six Seasons in Sartar)

SILVER BONUS CONTENT: Violence is Always an Option (1 page) - seven suggested skirmishes for hardcore RuneQuest combat addicts.

ELECTRUM BONUS CONTENT: Drawing the Black Spear (43 pages) - the evolution of the book and its art, via a year and a half of Nick Brooke & Mike O'Connor's conversations.

NOTE: Material in this book deals with mature themes. GMs are advised to adjust their presentation of this subject matter in accordance with their own and their group’s comfort levels.

Much as I was amused by the thought of scareing the hell out of the characters with a warband riding hell for leather towards the open gates of their "Hold" I am now left thinking a) Are the parties I play with more parnoid and trigger happy than normal? and b) Do the Othanthi tribes use big flags which can be identified outside of crossbow range? - If not I suspect a very major blue on blue incident with the Queen getting the gates slammed in her face and he horse cut down by a mix of earth elementals and crossbow bolts with multi missile (and thats only the Dwarf) before she gets into Othanthi poem range. Anyone any clue about how much it costs to replace the Queens horse and pay for her damaged dignity? At the mere thought of liability for "compensation" to arch foe and the Queen my party is likely to start giving thought to joining the Lunars!

Farsee is a Spirit Magic spell. I would expect at least one gate guard to have a few points in it to prevent mistakes like that.

I hope so. A proof-printed copy of the book is on its way to me now.

Blimey, that was quick! The cheap "standard colour" edition of BLACK SPEAR is now available as a print-on-demand hardcover book for $35.95.

There will in due course be a more expensive "premium colour" edition, for customers with more money than sense, but I honestly don't expect anyone to pay for that (and besides, my proof-printed copy hasn't yet arrived, so I can't put it on sale).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
